Lust have it! February 2013

There were plenty of Facebook teasers creating huge anticipation for this month (last month – February, that is).  The new packaging boxes that had been introduced in January were too small to take the full-sized products that companies vying for space in the pack were supplying.  So, every day like a child at Christmas, I was stalking the post man waiting for my treats.

And when it arrived I realised that some months it’s a great delight, and some months one is going to be disappointed.  And it’s never going to be the same for everyone, because we are all so different.  January was the month that sang for me, and February, not so much.

  1. Lancome Hypnose Star Show-Stopping Volume Mascara 6.5ml RRP $52 (Sample size in pack)

I used Hypnose for many years, and loved it.  This particular one differs in that it has a dual-sided brush to leave your lashes volumised and curled.  Hypnose mascara enhances your lashes with its liner effect to appear thick at the lashline whilst long and luscious through the tips.  I'm actually finding the unusual brush very easy to use, and Hypnose really is a great mascara!

  1. Summer Tan by Mancine – Self Action Tan – Dark 250ml RRP $29.95  (Full size)  Dark, I ask you?  Dark?

Unfortunately this was one of the full sized products that forced the plain packaging, and was a disappointment to me.  I will never try self tanning.  Too many things can go wrong, but I’m sure many recipients were thrilled to receive this.  The Lust have it! site has a great video tutorial though, and I wish I could be convinced that it is as easy to apply as they make it seem.

In the company’s defence though, Mancine is an Australian company that has developed a name for itself worldwide, believing in organics, natural products and the environment, and it does not test on animals.

  1. The Natural Source Camouflage Colour Nail Lacquer  12ml RRP $9.99

Nail enamel that is as ‘natural and pure as modern technology allows’.  Derived from sand and horsetail plant!!??  Cute bottle, as you can see.  But can you see the colour?  Bottle green – or as I would call it – school uniform green.  But Katherine loves green and is young enough to get away with this – so south to Sydney it will go.

  1. Kevin Murphy Born Again Masque  250ml RRP $49.95

This is a sample sachet containing a treatment to soften and moisturise hair and will be put to the test once the crazy rain in SEQ has stopped.  This contains agents derived from Olive Leaf and Shea Butter to make hair feel ‘Born Again’.  I’ll let you know……

  1. LonVitalite C10 Crystal Whitening & Moisturising Hand Mask  1 pair RRP $4.50

I’ll do a separate post on this product, because I am a bit excited about it.  Always a believer that the hands give away a lot about people, this product claims to even the pigment in age spots and blemishes.  So we’ll see.  A previous pack delivered a LonVitalite face mask, and it was a very pleasant experience, so I’m sure the hand mask will live up to the company’s reputation.

Now that I’ve shared the contents of the box with you, I must say I’m not as disappointed as I was when I first received it.  Maybe I can launch into Autumn with a deep, fake tan?  Dare me?

Our Weekly Wish Lists

It's Friday again and time for us to spill the beauty products we're thinking about, wanting, lusting over, interested to try for the week. When you read lots of beauty blogs, spend too much time shopping online or browsing in Priceline or the department store beauty counters it's pretty easy to regularly put together these lists

Sue's list:

1 – A body brush because Katherine has made me long for the benefits of dry body brushing.

2 – The Body Shop Shea Beautifying Oil -pure beauty in a bottle (for after body brushing and showering). Made with a lightweight blend of nut oils including Community Fair Trade marula oil, it gives instant hydration and a shimmering finish. This one has a delicious nutty scent.

3 – Estee Lauder Idealist Cooling Eye Illuminator. Reduces the look of dark circles and puffiness (I have a very bad habit of rubbing my eyes when I wake up in the morning

4 – Lancome's Absolue L'Extrait.  The power of youthful skin is captured in a cream-elixir that delivers a new sensorial experience. Each jar contains up to 2 million Lancome rose stem cells which enhance the self-renewal potential of our skin's stem cells and subsequently a more complete regeneration is now made possible. (Sounds too good to be true – but I think I need to try this!!)

5 – Laura Mercier Eye Canvas – Eye Canvas transforms your eyelid into the perfect canvas for eye makeup application. The innovative formula acts like a foundation for your eye, neutralizing the eyelid by providing lightweight coverage – all while extending makeup wear and prevent creasing and smudging all day.  (Whilst clearing out bookcases recently I came across my Laura Mercier beauty secrets book – I love her work and can't believe I've still never tried her products.  Must remedy that.)

Katherine's list:

1 – Chanel nail polish in 543 Frisson because that colour is too good to not own!

2 – Benefit Watts Up Highlighter – I've never tried a highlighter before and would have to research how to use it but there's something about this particular highlighter from Benefit that makes me want it.

3 – Some sort of exfoliator for sensitive skin (if it exists) because my skin is getting sad but I can't find anything that isn't going to make it red and angry. If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations, they would be greatly appreciated!

4 – NARS Ramatuelle Trio Eyeshadow – these colours are out of control amazing. Anything peachy coral is in my lust book at the moment!

5 – Unicorn Farts Lipbalm from Etsy – I know, it's horrifying to even include this in a post that also features Chanel, but it's brilliant and the combination of natural beeswax, unrefined cocoa butter, unrefined shea butter, jojoba, sweet almond, and grape seed oils who wouldn't want Unicorn Farts lipbalm?

Have a great weekend and, as always, feel free to share your beauty lust list with us!

Lust Have It – Lancome Gift

I am one of the easiest people to buy presents for.  I love clothes, perfume, candles, books, DVDs, and all manner of other girly things.  But this year for my birthday in early April, Katherine emailed me and said she wanted to do something different this time.

Inspired, I think, by the 'gift that keeps on giving' idea that her sister had used a couple of years ago in the form of a one year magazine subscription, she wanted to sign me up and pre-pay a monthly subscription for a home-delivered beauty box containing 5-6 sample-sized premium and boutique products.  I got to choose which company I wanted this wonderful gift from, and I chose Lust Have It.  Included with the first months box, there was to also be two Lancome skincare products, which I have always loved, as an additional gift.

I was hoping the first box was going to arrive before I went to Sydney, but it was not to be.  Then, whilst I was away, I got an email from them telling me that they were sorry, but I had missed out on the April box, as they had acquired another similar company (ie Glossybox) and were having to meet the demand of subscribers to both companies.  However, they assured me I would have my May box within 2 weeks.  But, I pondered, would the May box bring with it the additional Lancome products?  I got a bit worried and I wished for time to fly so that I would have my delivery.

Then, a couple of days after the first email, Lust Have It emailed again to say my pack had been dispatched and then again when it was delivered.  While I was stuck at work all day, I watched the clock tick slowly, wanting to get home to my package and wondering what it was waiting for me.

It was a smaller package than I had anticipated but I eagerly ripped it open – and lo and behold – they were right.  The May package was still on its way to me and today's package was the additional Lancome gifts – full-sized Renergie Morpholift Eye Serum and Night Cream worth over $200.

Thank you Lust Have It. Thank you Katherine.  I can take this kind of confusion any day – I know Lust Have It and I are going to have a long and happy relationship.

Gift With Visits

We've mentioned GWPs, but GWV's are almost better – they are gifts that come with family visits! Last week Mum and Grandma came to visit me in Sydney and aside from a memorable Priceline trip involving the three generations (very amusing, lots of money spent), their visit also came with this:

From the top: makeup bag, Lancome brush, Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion, Clinique All About Eyes, Clinique Youth Surge, Lancome brochure, Clinique High Impact Mascara, Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad, Clinique True Bronze Pressed Powder, Blushing Powder Blush, Clinique Superbalm Moisturising Gloss (not pictured), Estee Lauder High Gloss, small Clinique brush

We joke all the time about the copious amounts of beauty products Mum somehow manages to stockpile and, ultimately, passes on to anyone willing to take it. I think this photo is proof of that – there is more Clinique than I can afford and all of it gifts that she got purchasing other items. You may have noticed that from her post yesterday or the one last week about her love of the GWP.

I've been using the blush and eyeshadows almost everyday since the came into my possession, they are such good quality! Here are some swatches:

Unfortunately my light isn't great but you get the idea, they're shimmery!

The Lancome gloss is amazing. It moisturises and glosserises at the same time! It's definitely a new favourite:

And the Clinique creams are exactly what my skin needs just as the weather has taken a turn for the icy cold.

What does your mum bring you when she visits?

Estee Lauder and The GWP

Estee Lauder has long been credited as the business woman who started the 'Gift with Purchase' idea, way back in the early 1930's. As co-creator of the famous Estee Lauder line, she first gave handbag-sized samples to friends, and to the rich and beautiful, to introduce them to her products.  Not only was she a good, strong business leader, but she knew how to get the products into department stores and into the hands of their intended market.

And she understood women, stating "Beauty is an attitude.  There's no secret.  Why are all brides beautiful?  Because on their wedding day they care about how they look.  There are no ugly women – only women who don't care or who don't believe they're attractive."

Today there are a number of cosmetic companies that do the GWP special – Estee Lauder, Lancome, Revlon, Clinique, Elizabeth Arden, Clarins – and the list goes on.  They also do the rounds of the department stores.  If you miss the GWP at Myer, you can pick up a similar one a month or two later at David Jones (and even Terry Whites is now getting in on the action).

And I've done them all. I do have favourites, but none are exclusively targeted. Amongst my friends, I am known as the GWP queen.  I love the excitement of new products.  A new make-up or toiletries bag (I end up with so many I give them away to a charity that makes up toiletries packages for children taken into care). Tiny products that are great to use when traveling.  New seasons lipstick colours.  Cosmetics brushes. Mascara, eyeshadow, blush, skincare, and so on and so on.

I haven't bought a new blush, mascara or eyeshadow for decades, as I get them all in GWP packs.  Clinique always includes a small High Impact Mascara in Black which I love, and it means that I can hygienically replace it every 6 to 8 weeks.  I have baskets in the bathroom cupboard (called the 'shop' by my daughters) full of small and full-sized products.  I  love them, I use them, sometimes I do a bit of a stocktake, and sometimes I give them away.

I believe life is too short to not enjoy skincare and makeup.  I love it – but most of all I love the thrill of the chase when I hear there's a new GWP that has hit the streets!  If you've never indulged I'd urge you to try it just once.  It's like a special gift for no reason at all, and you never know, you may just find a new product that is just perfect for you.
